HC Deb 13 May 1912 vol 38 cc785-6
Mr. GREENE

asked the Postmaster-General whether only half an hour for dinner is allowed to the famale clerks and sorters at the Money Order Department, Manor Gardens, Holloway; and whether, in view of the provisions of the Shops Act, he will arrange that a longer period for dinner should be allowed to these employés?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The hours of attendance of female assistant clerks and of women sorters being eight a day and of women clerks seven a day, their conditions are very different from the usual conditions of shop assistants. There is a dining-room on the premises of the Money Order Department. In these circumstances, the meal intervals are not considered insufficient.
