HC Deb 09 May 1912 vol 38 c566
Mr. WATT

asked whether the judges of the High Courts in India are subject to a regulation which compels them to retire at any fixed age; if so, what is that age limit, and when was the regulation instituted; and to how many judges the rule has applied in the last six years?

Mr. MONTAGU

In 1899 the Secretary of State in Council decided that it was desirable that every chief justice or judge of a High Court in India thereafter to be appointed should be required to vacate his office on attaining the age of sixty years. This decision was published. No judge appointed since 1899 has remained on the bench after attaining the age of sixty years, but several have retired before attaining that age.
