HC Deb 09 May 1912 vol 38 c567
Sir JOHN JARDINE

asked whether the Government of Burma contemplates the extension of export duties to any products of Burma not at present taxed on export; and, if so, what these products are?

Mr. MONTAGU

I understand from a telegraphic report in the Press that the Lieutenant-Governor in a speech to his Legislative Council referred to a proposal, which he hoped to submit to the Government of India, for the levy of a cess on exported rice. The official proceedings of the Council have not yet reached me. The Government of Burma has no power to impose export duties without the sanction of the Secretary of State in Council, and any such proposal would require very careful consideration.
