HC Deb 11 March 1912 vol 35 cc799-800
Mr. O'GRADY

asked the Postmaster-General whether the firm of Messrs. Craig and Paton, carrying out the electrical installation at the head post office, Belfast, are not observing the fair-wage clause in the contract; whether he is aware that the firm in question are paying 8d. per hour to the electricians employed on the contract, while the recognised rate of the district is 8½d. per hour; and, if so, will steps be taken requesting Messrs. Craig and Paton to observe the district rate of wages, and to refund to the men employed the back wages due?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

This matter has formed the subject of special inquiry; and I find no reason to suppose that the contractors in question are not observing the fair-wages clause. I am informed that 8½d. per hour is not the recognised rate of wages in the district.
