HC Deb 11 March 1912 vol 35 c799
Mr. CATHCART WASON

asked the Postmaster-General if he will invite alternative tenders for conveyance of mails by motor from Lerwick to Hillswick, Lerwick to Walls, Lerwick to Scalloway, and Lerwick to Dunrossness, and Orkney from Kirkwall to Stromness, Dounby, and Birsay?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. Herbert Samuel)

Local inquiry is proceeding, and I am not at present in a position to answer this question. I will communicate with my hon. Friend later.

Mr. CATHCART WASON

asked the Postmaster-General if he will ascertain the cost of a fortnightly steam service from Kirkwall to North Ronaldshay, the present boat service being inadequate for the requirements of the people?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

I am informed that the cost would be about £6 a trip; but so far as the Post Office is concerned this expense could not be justified. There is already a considerable loss on the present three days a week service.
