HC Deb 04 March 1912 vol 35 cc10-1
Mr. HOARE

asked the President of the Board of Education what is the number of training colleges provided by local education authorities, other than the London County Council; and in which of these there is religious instruction as distinct from acts of united worship?

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. J. A. Pease)

The number of colleges provided by local education authorities, other than the London County Council, is twelve. Religious instruction as distinct from acts of united worship is given in seven out of the twelve, and is contemplated in eight. The names of those in which there is religious instruction are:—

  1. 1. Bingley (West Riding).
  2. 2. Bolton.
  3. 3. Hereford.
  4. 4. Portsmouth.
  5. 5. Brighton.
  6. 6. Crewe.
  7. 7. Manchester.

Mr. HOARE

Is that instruction provided by the Local Education Committee, or have facilities been given to outside bodies?

Mr. PEASE

I do not think that all the cases are on all fours, but I should like notice of the question.

Mr. HOARE

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he will state the number of students in denominational and undenominational training colleges?

Mr. PEASE

The number of students in training at the beginning of the Session 1911–12 were:—

4,773 in denominational colleges.
7,231 in undenominational colleges.
12,004 Total.
