HC Deb 04 March 1912 vol 35 cc22-3
Sir JOHN LONSDALE

asked the Prime Minister if he will state the results of the inquiries made on behalf of the Government as to the opinions entertained by the Protestant minority in Ireland respecting the safeguards which it is intended to introduce into the Home Rule Bill?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Asquith)

I cannot make any statement at present. The hon. Member will have an opportunity of discussing these matters when the Bill is introduced.

Sir J. LONSDALE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that Irish Protestants of all classes are of opinion that the safeguards proposed are absolutely valueless?

The PRIME MINISTER

They do not know what the safeguards are yet.

Mr. MOORE

In order to relieve anxiety will the right hon. Gentleman inform the House if the Bill containing the safeguards will be introduced this side of Easter?

The PRIME MINISTER

I cannot answer that question at present.

Sir J. LONSDALE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the hon. Member for East Mayo has stated publicly that artificial safeguards in an Act of Parliament are no real protection?
