HC Deb 17 June 1912 vol 39 cc1297-8
21. Mr. EDGAR JONES

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he can state the number of departments and schools in South Wales and Monmouthshire in which the temperance syllabus is now regularly and systematically taught; and whether his inspectors will report upon the sufficiency and efficiency of the instruction as upon other subjects in the curriculum?

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. J. A. Pease)

I am afraid I cannot give any exact information in answer to this question. Lessons in temperance and hygiene are usually given as part of the ordinary instruction in schools in South Wales and Monmouthshire, and the Board's temperance syllabus is, I understand, very largely used. His Majesty's inspectors report upon the teaching of these subjects in the same way as upon other subjects taught in the school.

Mr. EDGAR JONES

Can the right hon. Gentleman give the figures, in order that we may see how far the instruction allowed under the Regulations is carried out?

Mr. PEASE

I understand the instruction is being carried out, but it is very difficult to get any figures.
