HC Deb 13 June 1912 vol 39 cc1030-1
15. Mr. COTTON

asked whether the Irish Registration Acts provide for the assistant barristers appointed to revise the lists, and the County Court judge of the county arranging for the sittings in order to carry out the work of revision, and that this provision has not heretofore been acted upon by reason of the fact that the revising barristers' appointments are not made in time; and whether he will take steps to prevent this in future, and see that the clerks of the peace shall arrange the sittings as fixed by the judge and assistant revising barristers after they have met and decided upon the same?

Mr. BIRRELL

It is the fact that the County Court judge arranges with his assistants for the sittings of the Revision Courts within his jurisdiction, and I am not aware that there is any foundation for the statement that the provisions of the Irish Registration Acts have not been acted upon. The appointment of revising barristers is made in ample time to permit of the necessary arrangements for the Revision Sessions being made by the County Court judge in consultation with his assistants. The appointments are made at the end of July or the beginning of August, and the earliest day on which the Revision Courts can sit is 8th September.

Mr. MOORE

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that the appointments are made a little earlier than the end of July, so that we can can raise a debate in this House on some of the jobs of the Government?
