HC Deb 11 June 1912 vol 39 c686
40. Mr. STANIER

asked whether the Board are carrying out any experiments with sugar this year and, if so, where; and whether they are now satisfied that the crop can now be grown with success in this country?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. With regard to the second part of the question, perhaps the hon. Member will allow me to refer him to the Report on Experiments in the Cultivation of Sugar Beet in 1911, recently published as a Parliamentary Paper (Cd. 6162).

Mr. STANIER

May I ask if the right hon. Gentleman and his Board are satisfied: I have read the Report?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

There are some crops of sugar beet now being cultivated both in the Eastern and the South-Eastern counties: we shall know by the end of the autumn whether it can be cultivated on a large scale successfully.
