HC Deb 11 June 1912 vol 39 cc695-6
73. Sir HILDRED CARLILE

asked whether the right hon. Gentleman can state the number of carcases of Chinese pork imported into the United Kingdom for each month during the last year up to and including the month of May; and whether he can state the proportion of carcases rejected?

Mr. BURNS

In October, 1911, twenty-two carcases arrived at London from Shanghai; there were no rejections. In January, 1912, 3,790 carcases arrived at Liverpool. 3,527 have been examined up to the present, and of these four carcases and 150 pieces have been condemned and destroyed on account of disease or un soundness. In April, 1912, ninety car leases and fifty-six packages of sides Arrived at London from Manchuria and Shanghai. Of these fourteen carcases and one side were condemned on account of disease. The remaining sides were ordered to be re-exported as not complying with the Foreign Meat Regulations.

Sir HILDRED CARLILE

When the right hon. Gentleman speaks of pieces of carcases being rejected as diseased does he suggest that the remainder of the carcases are passed as sound?

Mr. BURNS

Oh, no. They are rejected entirely.
