HC Deb 11 June 1912 vol 39 c680
24. Captain FABER

asked the Undersecretary of State for War if he will state what reduction there has been in the troops in East Africa during the last two years; and whether any further reduction is contemplated?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. Harcourt)

I understand that the hon. Member's question refers to the three Protectorates of British East Africa, Uganda, and Nyasaland. There has been no reduction in the strength of the King's African Rifles in British East Africa and Uganda. In Nyasaland the strength has been reduced by two companies, but certain changes in organisation have been made which have had the effect of practically adding a half company to the reduced establishment. With regard to the latter part of the hon. Member's question, I am not in a position to make any statement.

Captain FABER

May I ask if the Governor is in favour or not of this reduction?

Mr. HARCOURT

I do not think I could answer a question of that sort—at all events without notice.
