§ 16. Sir J. D. REESasked the Undersecretary of State for India whether he could give the House any information regarding the rising in the Khost Valley and the present condition of the frontier between India and Afghanistan?
§ Mr. MONTAGUOn 14th March the Mangal and Zadran tribes of the Afghan district of Khost rose against the Governor, attacked an Afghan post, and proceeded to besiege the Governor at Matun. Since that date desultory and indecisive 678 fighting has taken place, in the course of which various Afghan detachments have taken refuge in British territory and have in due course been returned to Afghanistan by another route. It is understood that Afghan troops are being moved against the rebels. The neighbouring tribes on the British side of the border have been strictly warned against participation, and the present condition of the frontier is satisfactory.
