HC Deb 19 July 1912 vol 41 c672
64. Mr. C. BATHURST

asked what is the aggregate amount which has been repaid or allowed during the last financial year to agricultural landowners under Section 69 of the Finance (1909–10) Act, 1910, in respect of maintenance, insurance, management, and repairs, on payment of Income Tax under Schedule A?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

The amount was approximately £53,000. I may add that these allowances can be claimed within three years, and the amounts being claimed in successive years are rapidly increasing as the concession is becoming better known and appreciated.

Mr. C. BATHURST

May I ask whether there is any prospect of putting agricultural landowners under Schedule D, so that they will be assessed on their net incomes?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

I should like, first of all, to see the result of this experiment before we go further, for although we allow £500,000 as a margin, subject to the landowners submitting their accounts, up to the present they have not made their claims except for £53,000. The accounts are now coming in more rapidly.
