HC Deb 19 July 1912 vol 41 c662
28. Mr. GRETTON

asked what has been the increase in the staff of the Board of Customs and Excise in each of the two last financial years; if the increase has been in the indoor staff or in the outdoor staff, or both; and if the increase of the staff has now ceased?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Masterman)

The estimates for the Customs and Excise Department for 1911–12 provided for 344 more established posts than those for 1910–11; and the estimates for 1912–13 provide for fifty-nine more than those for 1911–12. These figures represent additions to both the indoor and outdoor staff. Since the estimates for 1912–13 were prepared the Treasury have sanctioned the addition of a large number of men available for both outdoor and indoor work.

Mr. GRETTON

What does the last number amount to?

Mr. MASTERMAN

I cannot say, but I will find out.
