HC Deb 17 July 1912 vol 41 c399
75. Mr. ROWNTREE

asked whether, under the National Insurance Act, a midwife must be insured whilst she is in attendance on a maternity case?

Mr. MASTERMAN

The Commissioners are advised that a midwife who undertakes a case on her own account, without any understanding that she shall work under a doctor, is not employed under contract of service. In these circumstances she need not be insured.
