HC Deb 15 July 1912 vol 41 cc36-7
87. Mr. GINNELL

asked whether the Board has noted the manner in which the Law Integrity Insurance Company, Limited, has evaded trial in the action brought against it by Glover; whether the surrender of the company was due to the policy in question having been a life policy or to its being ultra vires the company's memorandum and articles of association; and, in view of the practical admission by the company that its business is illegal and its continued operation as a means of obtaining money from people unable to bring actions, he will say what action the Board proposes to take for the protection of the public?

Mr. BUXTON

The Board of Trade have no information as to the action referred to, or that any life assurance policies have been issued by the Law Integrity Insurance Company, Limited, but if the hon. Member can furnish me with evidence that such policies have been issued I will consider whether any action should be taken.

Mr. GINNELL

May I ask whether anybody on behalf of the Board of Trade in Ireland watches public reports of actions against companies like this?

Mr. BUXTON

Observation is always taken of these matters, but we have to act under statutory restrictions, and we cannot go beyond them.

Mr. GINNELL

Then the Board of Trade take no action on behalf of the public?

Mr. BUXTON

We cannot go beyond the law.
