HC Deb 15 July 1912 vol 41 cc18-9
30. Mr. PETO

asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether any Regulations have been issued by the Insurance Commissioners which will provide for the case of an employer of domestic servants who is absent on the day when wages are paid and consequently cannot personally attend to the stamping of cards; and, if not, whether he will state what arrangements should be made by an employer in such a case who pays wages by cheque during his absence, and has no person whom he can depute to act as his agent in the matter?

Mr. MASTERMAN

The Regulations make an employer responsible for seeing that the stamps are affixed in respect of each week not later than the time at which wages are paid for that week. He must make his own arrangements for this to be done, but the stamps may be affixed either before or at the time when wages are paid.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

Will the right hon. Gentleman say what is to be done in the case of board wages paid fortnightly or monthly?

Mr. MASTERMAN

I am not quite sure. I think I should have notice of that question.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

If one's servants object, what is one to do?

Mr. MASTERMAN

Get the stamps oneself from the post office.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the post office have refused to supply people?

Mr. MASTERMAN

If the Noble Lord will bring any case of the kind to my notice I will have it seen into. Many thousands have been, I think, got from the post office.

Mr. BUTCHER

What means are there of ascertaining whether or not the stamps are put on the card?

Mr. MASTERMAN

I do not think that arises out of this question.
