HC Deb 19 December 1912 vol 45 c1668
40. Captain MURRAY

asked the hon. Member for St. George s-in-the-East, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether he is a position to make any statement in regard to the site selected for the King Edward Memorial?

Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN (Lord of the Treasury)

The First Commissioner is happy to be able to inform my hon. Friend that the Advisory Committee has received a letter from Lord Stamfordham conveying His Majesty's approval to a proposal that the statue of his late Majesty King Edward VII. should be erected between the Duke of York's column and Waterloo Place. At a meeting of the General Committee, held this morning at the Mansion House, it was agreed to adopt a scheme based upon this suggestion, and the First Commissioner is sure that this change will meet with general approval.

Captain MURRAY

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that announcement will cause gratification amongst a large number of people, and may I ask whether in connection with the site he will bear in mind no good reason has over been discovered why the Duke of York column was erected?
