§ 81. Mr. C. BATHURSTasked the Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware that the executive council of the County Councils Association have unanimously approved of the proposals that a road authority should be constituted to decide what ought to be the main roads of each county; that when this has been settled the same body should decide which of those main roads ought to be trunk roads; 1506 that the State should contribute towards the cost of the main roads the actual half of the cost of maintenance as promised in 1888; that for the maintenance of the trunk roads special additional Grants should be made subject to inspection by the central authority; that these proposals have been endorsed by the majority of Members of this House who are also members of local authorities; and whether such proposals will receive the sanction of the Road Board and the Treasury?
