BATHURSTasked what is the estimated amount which will be available from the Treasury to pay compensation for animals slaughtered as tuberculous under the Milk and Dairies Bill; and whether and, if so, to what extent local authorities will be required to contribute to the cost of this process?
§ Mr. RUNCIMANThe compensation to which, I think, the hon. Member refers will be payable, not under the Milk and Dairies Bill, but in connection with the 1077 administration of the Board under the Diseases of Animals Acts. The Board propose to make an Order providing for the compulsory slaughter of bovine animals in certain cases suffering from tuberculosis, and for the payment of compensation by the local authorities. The Treasury have agreed to refund to the local authorities one-half of the net cost, and it is estimated that the amount so refunded by the Treasury will be £60,000 in the first year.
