HC Deb 04 December 1912 vol 44 cc2299-300
83. Major ARCHER-SHEE

asked what was the average price of imported wheat during the year 1908, and what was the average price of the same commodity in Germany for the same year; and whether he can also state what was the duty per quarter of imported wheat enforced in Germany during that year?

Mr. BUXTON

The average value of all wheat imported into the United Kingdom was 36s. per quarter, and the average value exclusive of Import Duty, of all wheat imported into Germany in the same year was 35s. 9d. per quarter. The values in both cases are "c.i.f." values. In the case of Germany the Import Duty is equivalent to about 11s. 9d. per quarter.

Major ARCHER-SHEE

Will the right hon. Gentleman say who paid the difference between the duty and the small increase of price on the English price?

Mr. BUXTON

The hon. Member, I suppose, is referring to—

Major ARCHER-SHEE

If the right hon. Gentleman will say who paid the additional 11s. 9d. perhaps I shall be able to answer that question.
