§ 1. Mr. FELLasked the First Lord of the Admiralty if the £300,000 cash contributed by the Australian Commonwealth and the Dominion of New Zealand towards the expenses of the Vote for the pay of the Navy is treated practically in the same way as the £167,000 cash contributed by India towards the same pay?
§ The FIRST LORD of the ADMIRALTY (Mr. Churchill)In both cases the amount received is treated as an Appropriation-in-Aid of the relative Navy Votes.
§ Mr. FELLWill the right hon. Gentleman say whether the sum of £167,000 asked for from India represents any particular item?
§ Mr. CHURCHILLIt is the result of an Interdepartmental discussion which took place some years ago and in which the matter was arbitrated upon by a third party. I cannot say the actual basis on which the amount was arrived at, but that is the result of the arbitration after very considerable discussion.
