HC Deb 29 November 1911 vol 32 cc393-4
Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has been approached by the motor taxation conference to receive a deputation on the subject of the taxation of motor-cars; and whether, if he proposes to pass this year's Finance Bill before the 31st December, he will receive such deputation before the Bill reaches the Committee stage?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

My right hon. Friend in now taking steps to constitute a small committee to consider the existing regulations for calculating the horse-power of motor-cars for taxation purposes. He must await the report of that committee before dealing with the matter.

Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

May I ask if there is any probability of the report being received before this year's Budget is dealt with—that is, if the Budget is going to be dealt with this year?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

No, Sir; I said my right hon. Friend was now taking steps to constitute a committee, and I cannot hold out the hope of a speedy report.

Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider the advisability of receiving a deputation before dealing with this year's Budget?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

I think in view of the appointment of the committee that would be rather a waste of time.
