HC Deb 20 November 1911 vol 31 cc805-6
Mr. BOYTON

asked whether it is intended that the five-foot Ordnance map of London, which was last revised in 1894 and 1896, and is now in many parts out of date owing to alterations, shall not again be revised by the Ordnance Survey Department, but allowed to become obsolete?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Under existing arrangements, the Ordnance Survey are not authorised to prepare or to revise maps on scales in excess of twenty-five inches to a mile, except in cases in which the local authority is prepared to defray the difference in cost between work on that and any larger scale. Any alteration of this rule would involve very considerable outlay, and it could not be restricted to London. There is no present intention of making any change.

Mr. BOYTON

At whose expense will it be undertaken; will it be that of the local authorities?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Yes, if the local authorities wish to pay for the work, the work will be undertaken by the Ordnance Department.
