HC Deb 20 November 1911 vol 31 c823
Mr. MITCHELL-THOMSON

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can give any further information regarding the circumstances attending the death of the Reverend Arthur Douglas at Kango, on Lake Nyassa?

Colonel SEELY

I regret to say that the Secretary of State for the Colonies has now received from the Governor of Nyasaland a telegram confirming the news of Mr. Douglas's death. From the information at present available, it appears that Mr. Douglas was shot on the 10th of November by a Portuguese officer, named Taveira, in charge of Kango, a station in Portuguese East Africa. The British Consul at Lourenço Marques on receipt of the news at once took action in the matter with the local authorities, and His Majesty's Government are impressing upon the Portuguese Government the urgency of the arrest of Taveira, and of full investigation without delay. It would appear from a later telegram from the Governor that Taveira is now under arrest. It will be readily understood that it is not desirable to go into further details pending the result of communication with the Portuguese Government and formal inquiry into the circumstances.
