HC Deb 20 November 1911 vol 31 cc829-30
Viscount WOLMER

asked why certain private soldiers who took no part in His Majesty's Coronation have been awarded Coronation medals, whereas those who did take part have not been awarded any such medals?

Colonel SEELY

The medal was granted to the private soldier with the longest total service in the unit, irrespective of whether he was present at the Coronation ceremonies or not.

Viscount WOLMER

I want to know why?

Colonel SEELY

The matter was settled after full consideration and consultation with the highest authorities who considered these allocations.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

Can the right hon. Gentleman say if the idea was not to give the most worthy soldier of each rank a commemoration of the Coronation, whether he was lucky enough to be there or not?

Colonel SEELY

I cannot say.
