HC Deb 14 November 1911 vol 31 c184
Mr. GOLDMAN

asked whether the recent transfer of No. 2 Company, Royal Garrison Artillery, from Falmouth to another station is a temporary measure only; if so, when it is contemplated to replace it, having regard, apart from the military aspect, to the commercial loss to the community; and whether the Government are considering the question of compensation to officers, non-commissioned officers and men for the losses involved by this unexpected move?

Colonel SEELY

The move is a permanent measure, and it is not intended to replace the company at Falmouth. There do not appear to be any grounds for compensation.

Mr. GOLDMAN

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether this sudden and costly move was undertaken because of the shortage of the Royal Garrison units at other stations, and whether the defence of towns is to be handed over to Territorials?

Colonel SEELY

The move, which I should not describe as sudden, was made in accordance with the general scheme of defence of this country, and not upon the ground suggested by the hon. Member.
