HC Deb 14 November 1911 vol 31 cc193-4
Mr. C. BATHURST

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture if he can state approximately what number of persons are now engaged in agricultural and horticultural occupations in Great Britain; and how many were so engaged ten years ago?

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Mr. Runciman)

The number of persons ten years of age and upwards who were engaged in agricultural or horticultural occupations in the year 1901 was 1,402,929. I am unable to give corresponding figures for the present year until the returns of occupations obtained by the recent Census are available.

Mr. C. BATHURST

Can the right hon. Gentleman give figures for the last year that is available?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I think it would be better to wait for the accurate figures which will be rendered available by the Local Government Board very shortly.

Captain MURRAY

Will those figures include Scotland?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Yes.
