HC Deb 25 May 1911 vol 26 cc439-40
Mr. BUTCHER

asked what will be the position under the National Insurance Bill of salaried clerks of a railway company in receipt of a salary of less than £160 per annum who, under the existing conditions of their employment, are paid by the railway company their full salary when off work in consequence of illness; and whether such clerks will be compelled to pay a sum of 4d. per week as a contribution under that Bill towards an insurance fund against sickness and invalidity?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

Salaried clerks in receipt of a salary of less than £160 per annum will be compulsorily insured, and will pay the usual contribution of 4d. per week. I may remind the hon. and learned Member that sick pay is only a part of the benefits provided by the Bill.

Mr. BUTCHER

If these clerks are compelled to pay 4d. per week, will they, under the conditions mentioned in the question, obtain any payment under the scheme?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

Exactly the same answer may be made here as in the other case. Unless they are provided with board and lodging they certainly would be entitled.
