HC Deb 17 May 1911 vol 25 c2013
Mr. GOLDSTONE

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he was aware that, as the result of a census taken so recently as last Easter, the unemployed teachers' committee had the names of more than 400 qualified teachers on its books, the majority of whom had been employed for many months; whether he was aware that the committee had never attempted to act as a substitute for the usual unemployment agencies; that the applicant who was appointed by the Nottingham authority after communicating with the unemployed teachers' committee received a temporary appointment for a brief period only; whether he was aware that the majority of the local authorities who had replied to an inquiry on the matter stated that they had no difficulty in filling all vacancies for certificated teachers; and whether he proposed to take any action in the matter?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I have no authoritative information as to the activities of the unemployed teachers' committee or as to any particular appointment made by the Nottingham local education authority. The whole question of the supply of teachers is receiving my very careful consideration.
