HC Deb 15 May 1911 vol 25 cc1643-4
Mr. C. BATHURST

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture whether the Board has received requests from the Central Chamber of Agriculture and from the Tuberculosis (Animals) Committee to make an application to the Development Commissioners for a grant towards the payment of compensation for the slaughter, in the public interest, of cattle affected with tuberculosis unknown to their owners; and whether, in view of the intention of the Government shortly to introduce a Milk Bill, the probable consequent effect of the destruction of a large number of tuberculous animals in the interests of urban milk consumers, and the temporary check to the development of agricultural industry which is bound to result, the Board will make such application?

Sir E. STRACHEY

A request has been received from the latter but not the former body. The request is under consideration by the Board.

Mr. KILBRIDE

Will the Board also consider the advisability of compensating butchers who in good faith often buy cattle which are afterwards confiscated by the authorities?

Sir E. STRACHEY

I do not think that this arises out of the question.
