HC Deb 15 May 1911 vol 25 cc1644-5
Mr. LONSDALE

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture whether his Department has considered the Reports to the Local Government Board on the bleaching of flour and the addition of so-called improvers to flour, and on chemical changes produced in flour by bleaching; and whether, in view of the fact that these Report indicate that the Local Government Board are in possession of specific cases of the fraudulent adulteration of flour by manufacturers, he will obtain from that Department the information necessary to enable him to put in force the legal powers which are vested in the Board of Agriculture with a view to the protection of the public against frauds of this character?

Mr. LONSDALE

asked the President of the Local Government Board if he will place at the disposal of the Board of Agriculture the information which is in the possession of his department of specific cases of adulteration of flour by the process of bleaching and the addition of deleterious compounds, with a view to proceedings being taken against manufacturers who resort to practices which not only involve danger to the public health but defraud the consumer?

Mr. BURNS

The information referred to was supplied to the Board in confidence for the purpose of their inquiry, and it could not properly be used in the way suggested.

Mr. LONSDALE

Mr. BURNS

Yes.

Mr. LONSDALE

When is it likely to be received?
