HC Deb 15 May 1911 vol 25 cc1624-5
Mr. BYLES

asked why the summary figures of the recent Census of England and Wales are withheld, seeing that those for Scotland have already been made public?

Mr. BURNS

It is intended to publish, as soon as they are ready, tables of population for England and Wales, somewhat corresponding to those published for Scotland. The difference in size and population of the two countries accounts for the longer time taken here in issuing results.

Mr. BYLES

Does the right hon. Gentleman fully realise the serious disadvantage to the Press and the public if this mass of figures should be unloaded on them at the time of the Coronation? Would not the valuable results of the Census be imperfectly considered and inadequately digested at such a time?

Mr. BURNS

I realise there is some disadvantage, but man does not live by the Press alone.

Mr. BUTCHER

When are the tables referred to by the right hon. Gentleman likely to be ready for publication?

Mr. BURNS

We trust by the end of this month.
