HC Deb 09 May 1911 vol 25 c1041
Mr. NANNETTI

asked whether the Irish national teachers in Ireland, particularly those in charge of large schools, are compulsorily required to do work in connection with the 1911 Census outside of school hours, and without any remuneration; whether, in the case of schools with an average attendance of over 100 pupils, a staff of itinerant clerks will be provided by the Irish Census authorities to do the necessary work in those schools in connection with the Census; and, failing this, if the Trish Census Commissioners will obtain from the National Board permission for the teachers to devote portions of the ordinary school time to the compilation of the returns?

Mr. BIRRELL

It is incumbent on the head of the school to supply the information required for the Census of 1911 as on former occasions. It is not proposed to appoint clerks to do this work, and there are no funds available for the purpose. The Commissioners of National Education will not object to the principal teacher in large schools of over 100 pupils devoting a portion of the school hours to the preparation of these Returns provided the work of the school is not interfered with.
