HC Deb 09 May 1911 vol 25 c1016
Mr. SANDYS

asked whether an inquiry is being held into the causes of the accident to the Lebaudy dirigibles; and if he can state what sum is allocated for the construction of dirigibles during the, current year?

Mr. ACLAND

The flight of this dirigible, when the recent accident occurred, was made under private arrangements. The military are merely responsible for-furnishing all the assistance they are able to give. I have already informed the hon. Member that the total provision in Estimates for the manufacture, purchase, and repair of aircraft is £85,000. The allocation of money between airships and aeroplanes from this sum cannot at present be stated. At the time of the accident the airship was entirely under the control of the manufacturer.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDNE

May I ask if the cost of it will therefore fall upon the manufacturer?

Mr. ACLAND

Yes, I think so. It certainly will not fall upon the public Vote.

Mr. ARTHUR LEE

Will any of the money allocated for the repair of dirigibles be used for the purpose of the repair of this particular ship?

Mr. ACLAND

I hope not, I am sure.
