HC Deb 01 May 1911 vol 25 cc18-9
Mr. NIELD

asked the Prime Minister whether he has had an opportunity of considering, and has considered, the need for proceeding with all the large new Government buildings that are now being erected in Westminster, with special regard to his promise to concede Home Rule to Ireland next year, and later on to grant Parliamentary institutions of an undefined character to Scotland and Wales, as well as the development of large administrative institutions in provincial areas necessary to carry on the work of education and other national services; and whether he will appoint a Select Committee of this House to report upon the need for the large expenditure of public money upon the proposed extensions of administrative buildings at present going forward?

The TREASURER of the HOUSEHOLD (Mr. Dudley Ward)

The attention of the First Commissioner of Works has been directed for some time to the problem of making adequate provision for meeting the normal requirements for the accommodation of the public service, and a Departmental Committee has been appointed by him. The matter is now under the consideration of the Government; and no further expenditure will be incurred without the approval of Parliament.
