HC Deb 22 March 1911 vol 23 c393
Mr. LONSDALE

asked the Home Secretary if he will explain why the new labour adviser to the Home Office is to receive a salary of £500 a year, rising to £700 by annual increments of £20, although the salary of subsequent occupants of this office is to be fixed at £300, rising to £400; and whether any appointment has yet been made to the position of junior labour adviser to the Home Office?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The normal salary of the post of labour adviser is £300, rising by annual increments to £400, but I obtained the sanction of the Treasury to pay a salary of the higher amount if I could secure the services of a person of exceptional position and qualifications. The salary referred to is personal to the present holder. The second appointment has not yet been made.

Mr. LONSDALE

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what are the qualifications of the present holder of the office?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I really think that the House of Commons is fully acquainted with them.

Mr. KEBTY-FLETCHER

Does the right hon. Gentleman anticipate that any more hon. Members belonging to the Labour party will receive £700 a year from the public funds?
