HC Deb 21 March 1911 vol 23 c243
Mr. SYKES

asked whether the post office at Prestbury, Cheshire, has been recently closed for all Post Office business at one o'clock on Wednesday; if the hon. Gentleman is aware that the nearest office for the sale of stamps and transaction of telegraphic business is at Adlington, a distance by road of three miles; and whether, taking into consideration the fact that people have to travel three miles to Adlington, and, when they get there, are unable to transact money order, savings bank, annuity, and insurance business, which the Prestbury office does, he will consider a reversion to the former office hours, which have proved a benefit to the neighbourhood of Prestbury?

Captain NORTON

The Prestbury Post Office, in common with many other country post offices, is closed for a weekly half-holiday in accordance with the recommendation of the Select Committee on Post Office Servants, which reported in 1907. The local authority assented to the arrangement; and as the business is very small the Postmaster-General would not be justified in reverting to the previous hours of business.

Mr. SYKES

What local authority assented, and when did it assent?

Captain NORTON

I presume the Prestbury local authority.

Mr. SYKES

What local authority—the parish council, the local district council, or the county council?

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. Gentleman had better put that question on the Paper.
