HC Deb 20 March 1911 vol 23 cc39-40
Mr. KELLAWAY

asked the Home Secretary if his attention has been called to the evidence given by a police witness on Wednesday, 15th instant, in the Clapham murder case; if this evidence was in direct contradiction to the evidence of five other police witnesses; and if it is proposed to institute an inquiry into the matter?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The argument founded upon the incident in which the evidence was contradictory was expressly withdrawn from the jury by the prosecution, and the judge directed the jury to disregard it. I feel, however, that the occurrence requires to be investigated, and at the proper time I propose to appoint a competent person, unconnected with the Government or with the Metropolitan Police, to hold a full inquiry.
