HC Deb 16 March 1911 vol 22 cc2425-6
EARL of RONALDSHAY

asked if the right hon. Gentleman can state for what period the Turkish Government received consent to increase the Turkish Customs Duties from 8 per cent. to 11 per cent.?

Sir E. GREY

For a period of seven years, which expires in April, 1914.

EARL Of RONALDSHAY

Do I understand that in April, 1914, the Customs Duty will automatically revert to 8 per cent.?

Sir E. GREY

Perhaps the hon. Member will give me notice of that point. The duty was only granted for a period of seven years. Whether notice is required that it will not be continued, or whether it expires automatically, I am not quite sure. In April, 1914, there will be an opportunity for review.

Mr. JAMES HOPE

Does the right hon. Gentleman consider it is consistent with his principles to allow this burden to fall upon the Turkish consumer?
