HC Deb 16 March 1911 vol 22 cc2439-40
Mr. LONSDALE

asked the Chief Secretary if his attention has been called to the lecture delivered in Belfast on the 3rd inst by Major M'Bride; and whether, having regard to the character of the sentiments expressed, he intends to take any action in regard to it?

Mr. BIRRELL

I have seen a newspaper report of the lecture referred to. The answer to the second paragraph of the question is in the negative.

Mr. LONSDALE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this Major M'Bride is a paid official of the Dublin Corporation and that his treasonable utterances gave particular offence to the loyal ratepayers of that city?

Mr. MacVEAGH

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether Major M'Bride's speech was any more disloyal than the speeches of hon. Members above the Gangway who threatened to get up civil war in Ireland?

Mr. BIRRELL

The report I have of Major M'Bride's speech is certainly a tirade of ridiculous and dangerous nonsense, but there is no evidence available on which any proceedings can be instituted.

Mr. LONSDALE

Is this the class of servant the right hon. Gentleman would have under a Nationalist Government?
