HC Deb 15 March 1911 vol 22 cc2217-8
Mr. FELL

asked whether His Majesty's ship "Blenheim" suffered any damage owing to grounding on the sand bank when entering Harwich harbour; if the same ship grounded on the same sand bank two years ago; if the ship draws too much water for this harbour; and whether the depth of water is to be increased by dredging or what steps he proposes to take to avoid similar mishaps in the future?

Mr. McKENNA

No information has been received as to any damage sustained by H.M.S. "Blenheim" in consequence of the grounding on the 10th March. The ship grounded two years ago, but not on the same sand bank. There is no reason for supposing that the "Blenheim" draws too much water for the harbour, and consequently no steps appear to be necessary to avoid similar mishaps beyond the ordinary precautions of navigation.

Mr. FELL

Are these sands properly buoyed in the opinion of the right hon. Gentleman?

Mr. McKENNA

I shall inquire into the buoying, but I assume if they were not properly buoyed someone would make representations on the subject.
