HC Deb 15 March 1911 vol 22 cc2213-4
Sir CLEMENT KINLOCH - COOKE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he could give figures showing the sum available last financial year for age pensions out of Greenwich Hospital funds; and what portion of the income was used for purposes other than pensions connected with the maintenance of the building, staff, etc.?

Mr. McKENNA

The actual expenditure on Greenwich Hospital age pensions during the financial year 1909–1910 was £100,990 16s. 3d., and on Greenwich Hospital special pensions £23,414 16s. 9d. The expenditure for purposes other than pensions and the education of children was as follows:—

£ s. d.
On Northern Estates 3,517 15 4
On Greenwich Estate 2,350 6 4
On other property 628 12 11
On administration at the Admiralty 4,079 10 0
On Law Charges 685 12 9
On Paited Hall, Chapel, Cemetery, and superannuation allowances 4,713 17 3

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

What is the total?

Mr. McKENNA

I have not the total here; but when the hon. Gentleman receives the answer he will be able to add up the figures.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman, that supposing there was a sum available for old age pensions, was that sum sufficient to meet the number of applications received during the past year?

Mr. McKENNA

The number of applications that we receive is very numerous; we can only award pensions according to the amount of money that we have at our disposal.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

May I press for an answer to my question: Did the sum available over the sum for staff, buildings, and children meet the applications you received for old age pensions?

Mr. McKENNA

No, Sir. I received a great many more applications than I was able to meet.
