HC Deb 15 March 1911 vol 22 cc2246-7
Mr. STANIER

May I ask the Junior Lord of the Treasury if he can give the House any information as to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Surrey?

Mr. GULLAND

A notice was issued to the Press last night intimating that the slaughter of the animals involved in this outbreak had been completed and that the Board had made an Order (which takes effect as from midnight to-night) allowing the movement of animals intended for immediate slaughter into the scheduled area on licences issued by the local authority concerned. A thorough disinfection of the premises at Brooklands Farm is now being carried out. The veterinary examination of animals in the scheduled area is proceeding. No further report of suspected foot-and-mouth disease has reached the Board from any source. The investigations undertaken with a view to tracing the source of the outbreak are proceeding, but so far without result. It is not proposed to issue further daily reports so long as the present satisfactory position as regards the spread of the disease is maintained.

Mr. STANIER

Will the Secretary to the Board of Agriculture make larger research in this case than he did in the case of the Ripon outbreak of disease, in which they did not find out the source?

Mr. GULLAND

Will the hon. Member give notice of that question to my hon. Friend?
