HC Deb 15 March 1911 vol 22 c2245
Colonel YATE

asked whether the action taken by the Bengal Government in subscribing for a certain number of copies of a Bengali newspaper, with a view to assist and encourage the spread of sober opinions and accurate information where the intentions and acts of the Government are concerned, will be recommended by the Secretary of State for India for the favourable consideration of the local governments of the other provinces of India?

Mr. MONTAGU

The experiment to which the hon. Member refers was made by the Government of Bengal in response to a circular suggestion sent by the Government of India to local governments. The Secretary of State has now acquiesced in the action taken, but is in communication with the Government of India as to any further experiment in the same direction.
