HC Deb 14 March 1911 vol 22 cc2051-2
Mr. KEIR HARDIE

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether any grant is to be made this year in connection with the Unemployed Workmen Act; and, if not, will he state the reason why?

The PRESIDENT of the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Burns)

I am not at the present time in a position to make any statement on this subject.

Mr. KEIR HARDIE

Did the right hon. Gentleman receive any applications from the Local Central Body or any of the distress committees for grants this year?

Mr. BURNS

I have received some applications for grants from the Central London Body and we have made grants in cases where they were applied for.

Mr. KEIR HARDIE

Can the right hon. Gentleman say from what fund the grants were made since no provision has been made for them in the Estimates?

Mr. BURNS

The finance of the year does not expire until 31st March, and the grants made came from the money voted to us from the Treasury last year, which expires this month.
