HC Deb 13 March 1911 vol 22 c1860
Viscount WOLMER

asked whether the Government still believe in the necessity of a naval two-Power standard as formulated by the Prime Minister in 1908?

Mr. McKENNA

I would refer the Noble Lord to the precise definition given in 1909 of the two-Power standard, with regard to which I have no addition or qualification to make.

Viscount WOLMER

Are we bound by that definition in every respect?

Mr. McKENNA

Yes, by the definition I referred to of 1909, not that which was given in a supplementary question in 1908. to which the Noble Lord referred.

Mr. W. W. ASHLEY

Is the distinction between the United States and ourselves in that maintained?

Mr. McKENNA

The language of the Prime Minister very clearly sets out in 1909 what the definition is and I have nothing to add to it.

Major ANSTRUTHER-GRAY

What was the exact date of that definition?

Mr. McKENNA

I shall give the hon. and gallant Member the date. I have not got it just at the moment.
