HC Deb 13 March 1911 vol 22 cc1861-2
Mr. GRANT

asked if it is the intention of the Government to introduce any new legislation with reference to metalliferous mines during the current Session?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The Royal Commission on Metalliferous Mines and Quarries which was appointed last year has not yet completed its inquiry, and the preparation of new legislation on the subject cannot be commenced until its report has been received. I understand the report is not likely to be ready before July or August.

Mr. GRANT

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman when he expects the report?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I do not think it will be ready before July or August.

Mr. GRANT

asked if additional inspectors are to be appointed for metalliferous mines; and, if so, if such officials will be subordinate to the Chief Inspector of Coal Mines?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The question of the inspection of metalliferous mines and quarries is engaging the attention of the Royal Commission, and I do not propose to take any steps in regard to the appointment of additional inspectors for metalliferous mines or quarries until I have received their report. All inspectors of mines are subordinate to the Chief Inspector of Mines, whose appointment is not limited to coal mines but includes all classes of mines.
