HC Deb 02 March 1911 vol 22 cc542-3
Mr. GINNELL

asked the Chief Secretary, whether he can see his way to opening the inspectorships under the Board of National Education in Ireland to competition limited to teachers under that Board, and discontinue the appointment of external inspectors having no experience in teaching and no interest in education?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Commissioners of National Education could not approve of the proposal to confine the competition for inspectorships to national teachers. National teachers are eligible for these appointments, and have privileges in regard to age not granted to other candidates. It is not correct to say that the inspectors appointed under the present system have no experience of teaching and no interest in education.
